Cycling Movies

I have a tradition every year the day before opening day of the baseball season I watch some of my favorite baseball movies like The Natural, Bull Durham, Major League ect... It made me start thinking how come there aren't a bunch of great cycling movies. There are so many great stories in cycling that are so movie worthy. There is Eddy Merckx, the Greg Lemond story, 7 Eleven rise in European racing, and of course there's Lance.
Here is a list of cycling movies that I really enjoy.

Quicksilver
- Kevin Bacon is a New York city business man who loses his job and becomes a bicycle messenger. Bacon is joined by Laurence Fishburne as Voo doo, Paul Rodriguez, Louis Anderson and Jami Gertz finish out the cast of bicycle couriers. The film starts out with an awesome scene where Kevin Bacon is in a taxi and gets into a race with bike messenger Nelson Vails.

American Flyer's
- American Flyer's is the tale about two brothers who go to tackle the Hell of the West race. This was my first motion picture having anything to do with cycling that I had seen. The film is based on the Coors Classic or Red Zinger race and even features a cameo from Eddy Merckx and a nod from the writes by naming one of the characters "the Cannibal."

The Flying Scotsman
- Johnny Lee Miller plays the controversial Scotsman Grame Obree. Te Flying Scotsman is the inspirational tale of Obree's pursuit of the infamous hour record on a bicycle that he designed and built.

Breaking Away
- This is one of my favorites, Breaking Away is the story of Dave Stoller and the Little 500 bicycle race at Indiana University. This coming of age story of Stoller and his townie friends (Cutters) who try to out do the snooty college frat guys at their own race, the Little 500. Catch Dennis Quaid and Daniel Stern in one of there earlier films and a great drafting behind the semi scene.
